Teeth Whitening

Every time you brush your teeth with toothpaste, the chemical and abrasive compounds removes plaque and small particles of food between the teeth, leaving a cleaner mouth. However, to reach the deeper discolouration, brushing is not enough. Your dentist needs to deploy some basic chemistry, and that is teeth whitening. This form of dentistry helps you achieve a brighter smile, even for the heavily stained and dark-coloured teeth.

Why You May Need Teeth Whitening

Although teeth naturally darken with age, accumulation of surface stains from use of tobacco products and/or consumption of certain foods or drinks may cause mild to moderate tooth discolouration. Thus, you may need teeth whitening to:

  • Restore the colour of your teeth after a stain that was caused by trauma
  • Remove stubborn stains and yellowing
  • Boost self-confidence from a healthy, vibrant smile
  • And more…

The Process of Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening works by means of bleach that break stains on the teeth and make discolouration less concentrated. The procedure can be done either at home or in a dental clinic.

In-Office Teeth Whitening Procedure

At a dental clinic, you will go through the following basic steps:

Taking Impressions of Your Teeth

The dentist will first take a digital photograph of your teeth to help in monitoring the treatment progress. Your teeth will then be examined to determine what caused the discolouration.

Cleaning

The dentist will clean your teeth to remove bacteria, food particles, and other substances.

Application of Whitening Gel

Your dentist will put a rubber shield that will protect the gums before applying a hydrogen peroxide gel to the tooth surface. Depending on how severe the stains are, the procedure may last between 30 to 90 minutes and may need 1 to 3 appointments thereafter.

Zoom Whitening

Zoom whitening is a highly effective tooth bleaching procedure done with the help of laser whitening (UV light). The whitening gel is applied uniformly on the teeth, and laser light is used to activate the gel. This allows oxygen to penetrate the enamel and dentin, bleaching the stains while leaving the structure of the teeth intact. The procedure lasts an average of 30 minutes.

The pros of in-office whitening:

  • More effective than home remedy
  • Uniform teeth whitening
  • Quicker way to whiten teeth
  • Last long with no side effects

Home-Based Tooth Whitening (Applied daily 2-3 weeks)

For home-based tooth whitening, the dentist will take impressions of your upper and lower teeth and design custom mouthpieces. S/he will instruct you on how to use the custom-made mouthpieces as well as the whitening gel. You will be required to fill each mouthpiece with the whitening gel and wear it for a few hours each day for an average of three weeks.

For effective results, the gel should be applied regularly following the dentist’s prescription. However, you may also use over-the-counter whitening toothpaste and products as directed by your dentist.
