Periodontal Treatments
Periodontal treatment refers to the process of healing gum infections and diseases ranging from a simple inflammation to more serious conditions that can damage your jawbone and the soft tissues. In extreme situations, you can lose your teeth due to their weakened support! That’s why it is recommended to get any periodontal disease treated as soon as possible.

Why Should You Treat Your Gums?
The bacteria, mucus and food particles that enter our mouths gradually form a sticky, colorless “plaque” on our teeth. With time, especially if you don’t clean your teeth regularly, the “plaque” begins to harden to the extent of forming a “tartar” that you can’t get rid of by normal brushing. At this point, you need to see your dentist to clean your teeth before it begins to affect your gums and cause the following:
- Gingivitis: The accumulated tar on your teeth can attract some bacteria that cause inflammation of the gum. As a result, your gums can turn red and swollen, and finally, they begin to bleed.
- Periodontitis Failure to treat gingivitis evolves into a more serious problem that causes inflammation around the teeth. The gums begin to pull away creating some “pocket-like” spaces that become thriving grounds for harmful bacteria. Unchecked, the condition weakens the jawbone and connective tissues.

Periodontal Treatment Process
There are many ways to treat periodontal diseases. The following four are the major ones:
- Medications: Depending on how far your gum disease has spread, your periodontist can recommend some medications like antimicrobial mouthrinse, antibiotic gel, enzyme suppressant and antiseptic chip among many others. However, most of these medications are only effective when used for a longer prescription period.
- Root planing and scaling Your dental hygienist will scrape off the tar on your teeth up to the gum line (scaling). Additionally, you the dentist will clean the hiding spots for germs that cause periodontal diseases on the tooth root (root planing).
- Surgery Sometimes surgery can be the only solution to curing your periodontal disease. In this case, a flap surgery can be used to correct inflammation and deep pockets that remain uncured after applying other treatments. Additionally, your periodontist may recommend a graft surgery to help regenerate tissues or bones lost to the gum disease.

Lynn, my hygienist whom I see every four months, has this incredible way of making the dental visit surprisingly enjoyable. The reception team is not only welcoming but also super knowledgeable, and every staff member seems genuinely happy to see me.
I had an outstanding experience at this dental practice! From the moment I walked in, the staff made me feel incredibly welcome and at ease.
The dentists were not only knowledgeable but also took the time to thoroughly explain the treatment options available to me. The entire process, from the initial consultation to the final adjustments, was seamless and efficient. The office itself is modern, and comfortable, which added to the overall positive atmosphere. I am delighted with the results and can confidently recommend this practice to anyone seeking top-notch oral care and a fantastic smile transformation.
The best dentist and dental clinic I’ve ever been. The staff are friendly and accommodating from the time I walk into the moment I walk out of their clinic. I had my root canal and dental crown done and as expected it was exceptional and the procedure was done professionally.
They also made sure that I am comfortable while they are doing the procedure. I received an exceptional service and Dr. Mohamad Khorshid is really great! If you are looking for a dentist and dental clinic to take care of you, I would highly recommend Mississauga Smiles Dentistry. I’m a regular client since 2018 and they really took good care of all my other dental needs.
