Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Wisdom tooth extraction is a dental procedure used to remove the third molars in the very back of the mouth. These teeth normally erupt between the ages of 17 and 25. During this time, the other 28 adult teeth are typically in place, and usually, there isn’t enough room for wisdom teeth to grow properly. Thus, having them removed will not only fix but also prevent dental problems associated with impacted teeth.

Why It’s Important to Have Your Wisdom Teeth Extracted

Impacted wisdom teeth

Where they’re trapped in your gums or jawbone causing pain.

Cause damage to other teeth

The additional set of molars may push your other teeth, causing pain, bite issues, and crowding.

Cause jaw damage

Cysts may form around the wisdom teeth and damage the nerves and hollow out the jaws.

Inflame your gums

Wisdom teeth may be hard to clean due to their position. This may cause the tissue around them to swell and get cavities or gum disease.

Sinus Issues

Wisdom teeth can cause sinus pain, pressure, and congestion.

What Is The Extraction Process?

The procedure for extracting wisdom teeth may vary depending on their position, condition, and stage of development or how deeply they’re impacted. First, your dentist will take an X-ray to figure out the alignment of your teeth.

Fully Erupted Wisdom Teeth

Just like normal teeth, the dentist will first numb the surrounding tissue with a local anesthetic. Then, using some special tools, he or she will hold your tooth, sliding it side-to-side carefully and then remove it gently. This procedure may take as little as a minute.

Unerupted Wisdom Teeth

To access the tooth beneath the gums, the oral surgeon will make an incision and remove some of the bone covering it. In order to make the surgical extraction easier, the dentist may also be required to fragment the tooth to avoid a lengthy extraction process. Thorough cleaning will follow to clean out any remaining debris and then close the incision and place gauze to limit any bleeding that might occur. This procedure may take between 30 and 60 minutes.

What to Do After Surgery

  • Don’t smoke for at least 24 hours
  • Drink lots of fluids and eat soft foods
  • Don’t rub the area with your tongue
  • Brush and floss carefully
