SNORING & Sleep Apnea

Sleeping Difficulties?
We Can Help!

If you’re finding yourself waking up in the middle of the night gasping for air, more likely you’re suffering from obstructive apnea. This condition causes the relaxation of muscles around your throat and tongue, thus causing blockage of airflow to your lungs. As a result, the condition can also cause snoring at night. Below we focus on the use of dental applications, or mouth guards, to correct this problem.

Why You Need a Mouth Guard for Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea should not be taken lightly as it poses many health complications if unresolved. Below are some problems of sleep apnea that can be avoided by wearing a mouth guard every time you go to sleep.

Sleep-deprived partners

Snoring at night can cause relationship problems as it deprives your partner enough sleep at night. In fact, many family members complain they are sometimes forced to shift to another room away due to snoring.

Daytime fatigue

Shortness of breath linked to sleep apnea can disrupt your normal, restorative sleeping patterns. Therefore, you’ll occasionally experience daytime irritability, fatigue, and drowsiness because of your condition.

Liver problems

There is a tendency for people with sleep apnea to contract non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. This illness is characterized by abnormal functioning and scarring of the liver.

High blood pressure

Poor breathing leads to a fall in the level of oxygen supplied to your body. Your heart ends up straining to pump faster to correct the oxygen debt, thus causing high blood pressure or hypertension.

What should you do if you think you might have sleep apnea?

If you suspect you’re suffering from sleep apnea, do the following:

1. Consultation

Begin by consulting your primary care physician for screening. After it is accurately diagnosed, your care provider will discuss with you the available treatment options for your condition. It is only after an oral snoring device is recommended that you’ll be referred to a sleep dentist.

2. Mouth Guard

Upon visiting your local dentist, you’ll be told to bite down on a bite kit so that your dentist can use the impression to create an oral appliance that precisely fits your mouth. He or she will then place an order for your mouth guard, which may be delivered directly to you on a later date, or you might have to collect it yourself.

3. Monitor progress

After receiving your mouth guard, occasionally follow up with your sleep dentist to monitor progress.
