Root Canal Treatment

Dental braces are appliances that are mounted in your mouth by an orthodontist to correct crooked teeth. They can align teeth in a straight position to allow better functioning and make them esthetically pleasing. There is a broad range of brace types including the traditional metal braces, lingual, clear brackets, and invisible braces among others.

Why Is Root Canal Treatment Essential?

Our teeth are intended to last a lifetime. Yet, some damages may occur to a tooth and consequently infect the dental pulp. This infection can lead to inflammation, increased tooth sensitivity, unprompted toothache, and chewing discomfort. Some of the major causes of root canal infection and inflammation are:

  • Cracks in the tooth
  • Deep decay
  • Repeated dental procedures
  • Injury to a tooth

Therefore, you may need root canal treatment to:

  • Preserve your natural teeth and appearance
  • Enhance your biting force
  • Treat sensitivity to heat or cold
  • Avoid further dental complications
  • Prevent swelling of the gum adjacent to the tooth
  • Ease the pain

What Is The Process To Do It?

Root canal treatment is a simple process with little or no distress. An endodontist normally carries out the procedure, which can be finalized in one or two appointments depending on the tooth condition, and your personal situations. Here’s what to expect during the appointments:

Preparation

First, your dentist would examine the tooth/teeth and may even take a series of x-rays. This allows him/her to have a clear picture of the root canal and the extent of the pulp damage.

Removing the Pulp

The dentist numbs the area around the affected tooth and places a rubber dam (sheet) around it to ensure it’s dry during the procedure. The sheet also prevents you from swallowing any chemicals being used. The dentist will then open the tooth via the crown to access the pulp and remove it. If you have an abscess (pus-filled swelling), the dentist can drain it through the opening.

Cleaning and Filling the Root Canal

Once the pulp is removed, the specialist will thoroughly clean the hollow space. Then, using a series of small files, they will enlarge the canals so that they can be filled with a rubber-like biocompatible material.

Sealing and Fixing the Tooth

Once the canal is filled, the dentist will then seal the opening permanently to avoid reinfection. S/he may further recommend installing a crown to strengthen the tooth and protect it from fracturing.
