Dental Checkup

Dental Checkup

Dental checkup refers to a comprehensive physical examination of a patient’s oral health and teeth by a dentist for the purpose of detecting any symptoms of a disease. Sometimes, it is accompanied by teeth cleaning using specialized agents, usually before the checkup in order to allow a clear view of the teeth’s surfaces. Many dentists recommend dental checkup and cleaning at least once in every six months.

Why Do You Need Dental Checkup & Cleaning?

If you’re wondering what the point of dental checkups and cleanings is, the following are reasons why it is important and should not be trivialized:

  • Early detection of oral cancer – Without detecting oral cancer early, it can quickly progress and become untreatable. However, regular checkups can lead to its early diagnosis and treatment
  • Plaque, tartar, and cavities – Plaque buildup can turn into tar and ultimately cause cavities without the intervention of regular checkups and cleanings
  • Gum disease/gingivitis – Without professional cleaning, tartar buildup can spread to the base of the teeth, thereby infecting the gum and making it to pull away and weaken teeth support
  • Checking for bad habits – Regular checkups allow your dentists to detect some of your bad habits that affect your teeth, such as ice chewing, nails biting, jaw clenching, and teeth grinding among others
  • Uncover problems underneath the mouth’s surface – dental checkups sometimes involve x-ray imaging that allows the dental professionals to diagnose issues that are otherwise invisible to the naked eye

Why Do You Need Dental Checkup & Cleaning?

Our professional teeth cleaning can prevent plaque buildup, tar, and cavities

What to Expect During Dental Checkup

The first step involves cleaning and polishing your teeth. Typically, this is done using a hand scraper to remove tar from your teeth. Your dentist then uses a rotating rubber brush to smoothen the surface and eliminate remaining stains.

Additionally, the dental hygienist will conduct a comprehensive assessment of your mouth, gums, and teeth. This is done using a special tool that measures the “pockets” between the gums and teeth to determine the presence of cavities, and X-rays to uncover problems underneath your mouth’s surface.

In case a problem is detected, your dentist will either recommend specific treatment or refer you to a specialist who deals with the nature of your dental problems, such as an endodontist, an orthodontist or a periodontist.

Orthodontic Braces

Dental braces are appliances that are mounted in your mouth by an orthodontist to correct crooked teeth. They can align teeth in a straight position to allow better functioning and make them esthetically pleasing. There is a broad range of brace types including the traditional metal braces, lingual, clear brackets, and invisible braces among others.

Why You May Need Dental Braces?

Misaligned teeth and an incorrect bite may affect more than just the “orofacial” appearance. Through orthodontic treatment, the following conditions may potentially be corrected:

  • Spaces- Where you have gaps between your teeth.
  • Overbite- (Also called “buck teeth”)- this is where the upper teeth stick out way forward than the lower teeth.
  • Underbite- Occurs when the lower teeth protrude more than the upper teeth.
  • Open bite- Occurs when the rear teeth are biting together normally, but you still have a space between the side or/and front teeth biting surfaces.
  • Crossbite- When the upper set of teeth and the lower set are aligned asymmetrically.
  • Misplaced midline- This is where the center of your upper set teeth does not align with the center of the lower set.

Orthodontic Process

The very first step towards a new and stunning smile is setting up an initial consultation with your orthodontists. During this time, the dentist will inquire about your previous dental history and look at x-rays of your teeth and mouth. Typically, it involves:

  1. The preparation: The process begins with a full examination of your teeth and taking photos or X-rays to evaluate which option suits you best. Also, the orthodontist may establish if your mouth is in good health—the procedure is not recommended if you have inflamed gums or decayed teeth. Your dentist will then make an impression of the teeth that will be used to customize your braces.
  2. Fitting the braces: The particular procedure of fitting the braces will depend on the type of brace. First, the orthodontist will clean your mouth. Then for a fixed brace, the orthodontist will simply mount it. However, if you are considering a removable one, the orthodontist will show you how to insert and take out the brace correctly.
  3. The checkups: You will require regular visits to your orthodontist, every four to eight weeks. S/he will assess the brace to check whether it is effective and make pressure adjustments on your teeth if necessary. Remember, you will still need to continue with your regular dental visits for a routine oral checkup.

Time it will take: The time the treatment will take varies depending on various factors such as the extent of the malocclusion (teeth positioning) and the type of brace you are using. For most people, however, it normally takes one to two years to attain the desired outcome.

WHAT IS THE INVISALIGN TREATMENT PROCESS?

To ensure that you are eligible for Invisalign, the orthodontist will assess your teeth and the health of your mouth. If you are a potential candidate, here’s what you ought to expect during the treatment process:

WEARING YOUR ALIGNERS

The orthodontist will first make a traditional mold or scan a 3D image of your teeth, which will be used to customise your aligners depending on your desires and expectations.

Once ready, the specialist will give you sets of customised aligners that you’ll wear for 20 to 22 hours per day for the best outcome. Your orthodontist will advise you on when to replace the aligners.

Remember, you may need to remove the aligners when eating, brushing, or flossing.

MONITOR YOUR PROGRESS

After six weeks, you ought to visit the orthodontist for a check-up to evaluate if the treatment is going as expected, and make any adjustments when necessary.

DURATION OF THE TREATMENT

The treatment duration will depend on your wishes and the anticipated teeth movement. However, it usually takes nine to twelve months
